A 300 Year-Old Home Adapts to a Modern Family of 7 by Karen Egly-Thompson

“Living in the oldest home in Winchester, Massachusetts, sure has its charms. But with a blended family of seven, Craig and Kate Carswell knew the charm of a 1750 home wasn’t going to sustain their lifestyle for long. As the home had only one full bathroom, their kids would often run to the barn in the mornings and use the outdoor shower to make it to school on time. ‘I’m sure our neighbors saw lots of naked boys in towels running across the backyard,” Kate says,  The Carswells desperately needed more room.

For Whole House Remodel
$500,000-$1 Million Category

With its first ever submission to the nationwide Chrysalis Awards Program, Windhill Builders proudly placed as a Co-Winner in the Whole House Remodel $500,000-$1 Million category. The Chrysalis Awards program, begun in 1994, recognizes the nation’s best work in fifteen general categories of residential and commercial remodeling. The Chrysalis Awards are open to any professional remodeler and design professional in the United States. Windhill Builders’ winning remodel is the “Lynnfield Farmhouse,” a Colonial farmhouse, complete with iconic New England style timber frame barn, grand outdoor fireplaced living space and in-ground pool. The desire of the homeowners was to bring the home’s character back to life and at the same time reconfigure the layout, expand the living space and increase the number of rooms to accommodate their needs as a family. Windhill Builders was able to accomplish all of this while utilizing reclaimed wood floors, hand hewn beams and hand crafted/hand planed cabinetry to blend the old and the new.

“This was the first year they have entered the awards, and to take home top honors on the first attempt is impressive,” says Ken Kanline, Director of the Awards.
